General ledger

This is a real general ledger, not a categorised list of transactions. Entries balance, periods close, and a posted entry is never edited — it is reversed, which is what an auditor expects to see.

  1. 1

Work the chart and the entries

Accounts, journal entries and the trial balance. Entries posted by the system carry their source, so you can trace a number back to the rent charge or vendor bill that produced it.

  2. 2

    Correct by reversal

A posted entry cannot be altered. Corrections post an equal and opposite entry, so the original and the fix are both on the record and the history reads as what actually happened.

Worth knowing

Every posted entry carries a hash over its own content chained to its predecessor. Changing a covered field, or lifting an entry out of the middle, invalidates that entry and every one after it — which is not something a stray UPDATE does by accident.
